Digital Eye Strain: Make Screen Work More Comfortable

Long sessions on a phone, laptop or monitor can be followed by tired eyes, temporary blur, headache or dryness. Screen-related discomfort can also overlap with uncorrected vision or dry-eye disease. Small changes may help, but they cannot identify the cause of persistent symptoms.

01

Why screen work can feel tiring

People often blink less fully while concentrating on near tasks. Glare, small text, poor contrast, an uncomfortable viewing distance, reflections and long uninterrupted sessions can add effort. Air conditioning or a fan directed toward the face may increase surface dryness for some people.

Notice whether discomfort appears after a particular task, improves when you look away, affects one or both eyes and comes with headache, double vision or blur. This pattern can help an eye-care professional separate a screen trigger from a focusing or health problem.

02

Adjust your workspace

Place the screen so you can read without leaning forward, reduce distracting reflections, use text size that feels comfortable and keep room lighting balanced with screen brightness. Take regular brief distance breaks and blink deliberately when you notice staring. There is no single distance that fits every desk and body.

If you wear contact lenses and screens leave your eyes uncomfortable, discuss lens wear time and surface symptoms with a clinician. Do not buy “blue-light” products on the promise that they prevent eye disease; ask whether a prescription or ergonomic change is actually needed.

03

Look for reasons beyond the screen

An outdated prescription, astigmatism, dry eye, focusing coordination or another condition can make close work uncomfortable. A comprehensive assessment may check refraction, eye surface, alignment and other findings based on symptoms. A screen break may relieve strain without treating the underlying issue.

Arrange an eye check when symptoms keep returning, interfere with work, or include persistent blur, double vision, pain, redness or light sensitivity. Seek urgent care for sudden vision loss, injury, severe pain or new flashes and a curtain-like shadow.

04

Make a plan that fits your workday

Choose one change at a time—screen position, text size, glare control or a scheduled look-away reminder—and notice whether it helps over several days. If discomfort continues, take your notes to an eye appointment rather than layering several unverified drops or devices.

Tell the clinician how many hours you use screens, whether you wear contacts, what task is difficult and whether symptoms persist away from the screen. These details can make advice more specific to your routine.

Questions, answered

Common questions

Use these answers to prepare for a consultation. Personal advice depends on an examination.

Can screens permanently damage my eyes?

Temporary discomfort is common, but persistent symptoms deserve assessment. This guide cannot diagnose the cause or rule out a separate eye problem.

Do blue-light glasses stop eye strain?

They are not a universal fix for eye strain. Screen ergonomics, prescription and tear-film factors may be more relevant; ask an eye professional.

Can phone use cause dry eyes?

Concentrated near work can reduce blinking for some people and contribute to discomfort. A clinician can assess persistent dryness.

When should I see an eye doctor?

Book an examination when symptoms persist or affect daily tasks; urgent changes such as sudden vision loss or severe pain need prompt care.
