Your First Visit to the Eye Hospital: What to Expect, Step by Step
01
Before you come
Carry existing glasses, previous prescriptions or reports, a list of current medicines, and your sugar/BP records if relevant. If dilation is likely, bring someone to accompany you.
02
At reception
Share your main concern in plain words — blur for 3 months, floaters since yesterday. Precise starting points focus the examination.
03
The examination flow
Tests may include vision and refraction, eye pressure, a front-of-eye examination and a retinal examination when indicated. Ask the clinician to explain any test or finding you do not understand.
04
Discussing next steps
If care is recommended, ask about options, expected benefits, risks, alternatives and costs. Request written instructions and a follow-up plan if they are not offered.
Questions, answered
What people often ask.
These answers are a starting point. Your clinician can advise based on an examination.
How long will the visit take?+
It depends on the clinic flow and any tests or dilation needed. Contact the clinic before your visit if you need to plan around a specific time.
What if surgery is recommended?+
Ask why it is being considered, what alternatives exist, and what could happen if you wait. You can ask for time to decide or seek another professional opinion.
