Emergency Eye Symptoms: When to Stop Reading and Call Now

01

Seek urgent care

Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes; a curtain or shadow across vision; a sudden shower of floaters or flashes; severe eye pain with nausea or halos; chemical splash (begin rinsing immediately while arranging care); eye injury or an object stuck in the eye; or a red, painful eye with light sensitivity.

02

What to do while arranging care

Do not rub, press or self-medicate the eye. Bring the medication or product involved if relevant. After a chemical splash, begin rinsing immediately and continue while arranging urgent care.

03

Questions, answered

What people often ask.

These answers are a starting point. Your clinician can advise based on an examination.

Is a little eye pain an emergency?

Pain severity alone cannot identify the cause. Severe pain or pain with vision change, light sensitivity, nausea or injury needs urgent assessment.
