Cornea and Anterior Segment: Conditions, Tests and Care
The cornea is the clear front surface of the eye. Corneal and anterior-segment problems have different causes and may need different tests or treatment; an examination is needed to identify the issue.
Cornea specialists manage corneal infections and ulcers, ocular surface disease, scars and dystrophies, keratoconus, and conditions of the iris and lens front-segment.
02
Corneal infection: when to seek care
A corneal infection can threaten sight and needs prompt assessment. Contact-lens wear, injury and use of unprescribed steroid drops are important history to share. Pain, redness or reduced vision should not be self-treated.
03
Keratoconus
Keratoconus changes the cornea’s shape and can distort vision. Mapping tests help assess the cornea. Glasses or specialty contact lenses may help vision; cross-linking may be considered to slow progression in selected eyes, not to reverse existing changes.
04
Possible care options
Depending on the diagnosis, an eye specialist may discuss medicines, surface care, contact lenses or a procedure. Availability and suitability must be confirmed with the treating team; each option has limits and risks.

Can contact lenses be used safely?+
Many people use lenses with care, but suitability and wear instructions are individual. Follow the prescriber’s cleaning and replacement instructions, and seek advice for redness, pain or blurred vision.
Can a corneal scar be removed?+
Superficial scars may be treated with laser or surface procedures; deep scars may need transplant. Candidacy is decided after imaging.
What is corneal cross-linking?+
A procedure using riboflavin and controlled ultraviolet light that may be considered to slow progression in selected keratoconus cases. It does not restore a normal corneal shape or guarantee clear vision.
