LASIK Eligibility: What a Proper Assessment Checks

A wish to reduce glasses is not the same as being a safe candidate for LASIK. A suitability decision follows an eye examination and measurements; an online checklist cannot assess corneal shape, tear film, retinal health or the reason a prescription may be changing.

This educational summary is based on the public references listed below. It does not diagnose or replace advice from an eye-care professional who has examined you.

01

Prescription and medical history

The team records your current glasses prescription and asks whether it has been stable, along with previous eye procedures, contact lens wear, medicines, health conditions, pregnancy or nursing where relevant, and symptoms such as dryness. These details can change the timing, choice or suitability of a procedure.

Do not stop prescribed medicine to qualify. Bring your prescription history and tell the clinician about steroid use, autoimmune disease, diabetes, prior injury and any family history of corneal disease. The surgeon decides which details require further assessment.

02

Corneal shape and thickness

Corneal mapping or tomography helps assess the front surface’s shape and look for patterns that may make laser reshaping unsafe. Pachymetry measures thickness. The laser changes corneal tissue, so adequate tissue and a regular, healthy cornea are important parts of planning.

A normal-looking glasses prescription does not rule out an unsuitable corneal pattern. If a clinician advises against LASIK because of measurements, ask which finding drove the recommendation and whether monitoring, glasses, contact lenses or another option is safer.

03

Tear film, pupils and the rest of the eye

The assessment may include tear-film and surface evaluation, pupil measurements, pressure checks, refraction and a retinal examination when indicated. Dry eye can affect comfort and visual quality; untreated surface problems may need attention before a refractive decision.

The clinician also considers the amount and type of refractive error, realistic visual expectations and how night driving or close work matters to you. Additional tests are selected for clinical reasons; there is no single fixed test bundle suitable for every patient.

04

A safe candidacy conversation

Ask which procedure is proposed and why, what alternatives fit your measurements, which risks matter most in your case, what symptoms might continue afterwards, the chance that glasses are still needed, and what follow-up is included. Request enough time to read consent information before signing.

The United States FDA and professional patient resources describe risks and suitability factors, but device approval and treatment rules differ by country. A Delhi ophthalmologist must explain the locally available procedure, device and individual plan. No responsible web page can approve a person for surgery.

Questions, answered

Common questions

Use these answers to prepare for a consultation. Personal advice depends on an examination.

Can I check LASIK eligibility online?

No. Online questions cannot measure corneal shape, thickness or health. A full in-person assessment is necessary.

Does thin cornea always mean no vision correction surgery?

It may make a specific procedure unsuitable, but the decision depends on complete measurements and available alternatives. Ask the surgeon to explain the finding.

Why might a clinic defer LASIK?

A changing prescription, surface disease or a measurement that raises safety concerns may lead to further tests, treatment or a recommendation not to proceed.

Does LASIK guarantee I will never need glasses?

No. Outcomes vary, age-related near-vision changes continue, and some people still need glasses or further assessment.
