Eye Exams After 40: Build a Check-Up Plan That Fits You

Around middle age, many people find close reading harder, but presbyopia is not the only reason vision can change. An eye check is a chance to review refraction, eye health, medical history and family risk. The right interval depends on the findings and should be set with a clinician.

01

Near focus can change with age

Presbyopia is a common age-related difficulty focusing at near. People may hold reading material farther away, need brighter light or feel strain during close work. Reading glasses can help when prescribed, but a new symptom should not automatically be attributed to age.

Tell the clinician whether blur is near, far or both, whether one eye is different, and whether you have pain, double vision, flashes or a sudden change. A measured refraction and examination can identify whether glasses are enough or another assessment is needed.

02

Review risk factors and medicines

Share diabetes, high blood pressure, previous eye injury or surgery, steroid use and family history of glaucoma or retinal disease. Bring a list of medicines and your prior glasses prescriptions. These details can affect which tests are useful and how soon the clinician wants to see you again.

A normal-feeling eye is not always a healthy eye; some conditions can progress before symptoms are obvious. Ask whether your visit includes a dilated retinal examination and what the tests are intended to check.

03

Plan tests and transport

Depending on the history and findings, an exam may include vision and refraction, eye pressure, slit-lamp examination and a view of the retina after dilation. Additional imaging or field tests are ordered when the clinician has a reason; not everyone needs every test.

Dilation may blur near vision temporarily and make light uncomfortable. Ask the clinic before the visit whether you should avoid driving, and arrange another way home if needed. Carry sunglasses if advised and allow enough time for the appointment.

04

Turn the result into a follow-up plan

Before leaving, ask what the examination found, which tests were normal or need repeating, when you should return and which symptoms mean you should come sooner. Request copies of reports so changes can be compared over time or shared with another clinician.

Do not use an online schedule as a substitute for your clinician’s recommendation. Diabetes, glaucoma risk, previous findings and symptoms can change the interval. Sudden sight loss, severe pain, chemical exposure or a new dark curtain needs urgent care.

Questions, answered

Common questions

Use these answers to prepare for a consultation. Personal advice depends on an examination.

Does everyone need an eye test every year after 40?

Not necessarily. The interval depends on personal risks, eye findings and a clinician’s advice.

Is difficulty reading always presbyopia?

No. Refractive error and other eye conditions can cause near blur. An examination clarifies the cause.

Will the eye exam include dilation?

It may, depending on the reason for the visit and examination. Ask the clinic what to expect.

Can I drive after dilation?

Near blur or light sensitivity may affect driving. Follow the clinic’s advice and arrange transport if needed.
